Hi folks - I would like to hear from anyone with views for and against open auditions via online casting. I am strongly supportive because of the positive things that have happened to me (see my blog) which frankly could not possibly have happened via traditional casting protocols. All the best Wayne

I would have to agree with you wayne . Its very exciting:

I lost my agent in 2005 to the music industy , I was at a lost , didnt know what to do as other agents books were closed or they hadnt seen me in anything:

Online casting has a Thumbs up from me:

However I'd also like to see more paid work for actor's who can really make a living from acting:  I find that somtime's people who are casting for Pilots or shorts do not treat the actor as a professional just because there not going through an agent:

I'd like to learn to negoiate my rate if Im too stay as a solo actor:

   What do u thinK ?

Never tried it, but I guess any chance for talent is a good thing. Would you say it was better for casting TV roles rather than stage?

Thanks to James and Mo for their replies.

Online Casting has resulted in us both being cast in a high profile professional animated series. I agree with you entirely about the availability of paid work. I have no doubt that there is plenty of work out there but as things stand unless you have had formal training and are registered with Equity and/or Spotlight the chances of you even being made aware of pro casting calls is virtually nil. The BTMS site specifically and Rok Motion in general are seeking to change all that so that anybody can apply for any job. Of course every actor will have to show his/her worth and unless they are good enough they wont get the roles but with online casting you will at least be considered which is a considerable improvement on the current situation.

Mo

I think online casting will prove to be an effective tool for Directors in all forms of entertainment be it stage film or TV. Online casting doesnt seem to me to be aimed at any one discipline specifically. All it does is give any person the opportunity to be considered for a role which at the present time via traditional casting methods  just isnt possible for thousands of people who have not had formal training or are not registered with Equity or Spotlight. It certainly doesnt guarantee roles for sub standard actors. Once you have submitted an online clip the Director will view it then assess it and then give feedback which of course could be positive or negative. The one danger I can see is that in the future everybody will use online casting because it saves unnecessary expenditure for both the Director and the Actor. The question will then be does the Director using online casting have the necessary clout and contacts to deliver a quality film play or TV show. I was lucky enough to sign up with the Bethemoviestar.com site who without question are extremely well organised and connected. Logic says that not everybody will be able to deliver what they have which is why I am urging people to sign up with them now before online casting becomes the norm. Even if online casting is adopted by every good and bad film tv or play maker the principle remains that anybody who applies will at least have the chance to be heard or seen by the casting director which currently just isnt the case for anybody seeking quality roles by traditional methods.

Presumably online casting makes the process less nerve wracking? Ive always found that the travel there, the inevitable delays on the tube, waiting with a bunch of nervous actors eyeing each other, can sometimes sap my inner calm....does being able to audition online make it more about the actor dictating the way they want to be perceived do you think?

Hi Cleopatrasneedle. Thanks for your post. First and foremost the advantages to Director and Actor are reduced costs. All the things you mention, quite rightly, not only cost a lot of money ie travel food accommodation etc but they also cost a lot of time. In the real world anything that reduces yours and the Directors costs is always going to at least be considered. To me it makes sense that a Director has a look at what you can do, albeit on a computer screen, before he asks you to invest your time and your money in travelling to auditions. The main difference between this casting format and traditional casting methods is that sites like bethemoviestar.com guarantee that your audition entry will be looked at by the Director and not only that, you will always receive constructive feedback from a team of assessors as well as other site members. Traditional casting methods do little more than summon you to an audition, if you are lucky enough to get one, and say yes or no. Thats all you get from that process.  I can only see online casting becoming more and more popular and eventually becoming the audition protocol of choice. The only word of caution I would issue is to check out the online casters website before you sign up. Dont ever pay any money to join or to take part in offered auditions. Beware those sites that charge you to ring up and vote for your favourtie artiste or film clip. Such sites are clearly set up to make money and as far as I can see are much less likely to have their members interests at heart.  This is why bethemoviestar.com scores so highly with me. They have never asked for as much as a penny and if you get cast with them they will always pay you.  All the best

I agree with virtually all the points made in this forum. I would always defend the right for people to hold and express any view they wish to. The one area I think I need to clarify is that some folks seem to think that online auditioning is somehow intended to replace face to face auditions. It could never do that. What it does do is give more people access to auditions i.e. it guarantees that an audition piece is actually viewed by a Director. Under traditional protocols very few people would actually get the chance to audition in person so if there was no alternative that would be the end of the story for him or her. Having submitted your clip the Director then shortlists those who may be suitable for a role and then there would certainly have to be a face to face meeting and further auditioning. As many have noted the wheat would be sorted from the chaff at that stage without any expense being incurred by the actor or Director. That has to be a good thing doesnt it?
